Artist's Description

This is a tree which stands near the edge of one of the points near the parking lot of Olmsted Point. During the day, tons of people stand next to it to get their pictures taken with Clouds Rest and Half Dome in the background.

I wanted to have an interesting foreground element to my milky way shot and I thought the tree would be a good subject. I set my camera up behind it as low to the ground as I could. I also usually shoot wide open and with no more than 15s shutter speed because otherwise you start to get star movement in your image, however, since I wanted to get the tree in focus as well as the stars, I opted for a smaller aperture, slower shutter speed and higher ISO than usual.

To get some good light on the tree, I waited until a car was passing by along the road. The headlights are what give the tree the orangeish side lighting. From the front, I used a small headlamp set to the lowest setting to fill in the shadows and illuminate the rock on the bo...
