Description
The Milky way and glow of the Aspen Fire from Olmsted Point, Yosemite
After spending the day driving up and down the Tioga Road, I decided to stop somewhere to try and capture the night sky. It was completely clear (much to my dismay earlier when I was trying to get a sunset shot in the Tuolumne Meadows) and I didn't see the moon anywhere in sight. I decided to stop at Olmsted Point instead of Tenaya Lake due to the camp grounds around there giving off light and the long stretch of road with cars constantly driving by.
I waited until the light from the sun completely disappeared from the horizon (to the back right of the camera in this image), then got out and set up. I climbed out along the granite slopes taking shots from various positions and trying to find interesting foreground elements. Kind of funny how as I was about to leave, I take one last shot from in front of my car in the parking lot and it turns out to be my favorite.
In the image, you can see the Milky Way in the night sky. The orange glow coming from the far side of Clouds Rest are from the Aspen Fire which is currently burning south of Yosemite near the Mammoth Pool Reservoir and Huntington Lake.
